About Dog Calculator
We built Dog Calculator because the old “multiply by 7” rule has been wrong for as long as it’s been popular, and most calculators on the web still use it. We wanted something better: a quick, friendly tool that uses peer-reviewed science to give you a real answer about your dog’s age.
Our calculator is based on a 2020 study from UC San Diego, which used DNA methylation to compare dog and human aging. The result is a formula that takes dogs’ accelerated early years into account and only catches up to a “seven-to-one” ratio much later in life. We layer in breed-size adjustments because a Chihuahua and a Great Dane do not age at the same speed, and pretending they do helps nobody.
Beyond the math, we wanted the experience to feel like something built by people who actually like dogs. Friendly copy, warm colors, life-stage context, and personalized insights, because you’re not just running a calculation, you’re thinking about a living, breathing little goofball who has at some point eaten one of your shoes.
Dog Calculator is, and will always be, free. No paywalls, no email gates, no nonsense. If we ever run ads, it’s to keep the lights on so this stays free for everyone.
